The College Scoop!
Now that you have a list of colleges and your Common Application is started, it is time to research application deadlines. Submitting applications before the deadline is critical since missing an application deadline would mean you would be denied to that college. The Common Application and the university websites should list all deadlines for admission. Write down all deadlines and keep in a place where you can see and be reminded of them frequently. Developing a plan for completing your application based on the deadlines is particularly important application strategy.
What Are the Different Types of Deadlines?
There are 3 types of deadlines by which all application materials must be submitted: Early Action / Early Decision Deadlines, Regular Decision Deadlines, and Rolling Deadlines.
Early Action and Early Decision: These deadlines are for those students who know their top-choice school(s) and want to apply in the earliest round of admission. Early Action/Decision deadlines are typically November 1st of the student’s senior year, and schools require that all application materials should be ready and submitted by this deadline. A college that allows Early Action will allow students to apply to any college that participates in the Early Action admission process. However, a college that does Early Decision restricts students to only apply to 1 college (their college) early. Since students submit applications Early Action or Early Decision, they are notified about admission in December.
Regular Decision: Deadlines for Regular Decision typically start December 31st and go through March. The Regular Decision application process is typically what colleges consider as their main application deadline, because the majority of students apply during this window. Colleges with deadlines during this time will notify students regarding admission starting late March through early April.
Rolling Decision: Rolling Decision deadlines are the most flexible because colleges do not have an official “deadline” for admission. These colleges allow students to submit their application at their convenience and will notify students of admission after a set time.
